After 80 minutes of battling the Dennison Big Red and the muddy conditions, the Spartans emerged from Littick Field as the 2016, Great Lakes Conference Challenge Cup Champions! The Spartans got off to a slow start with a 5 - 0 nothing lead at halftime, however the team kicked it into gear in the second half, and emerged with a 20 - 0 win. As a result, the team has earned itself a birth in the Midwest Regional Playoffs as one of the final 16 teams in the country
Throughout the entire game, the field was increasingly muddy, making speed and quick movements difficult, resulting in a forwards led first half. Leading the forwards charge was Captain Ray Gajkowski and breakout lock Max Zipf. However, the 2nd half of the game opened up the scoring for team with a hat trick of scores by winger Zane Braslawsce. Additionally, 2 of the scores came from the precision kicks of fly half Jackson Pilliod, earning himself Man of the Match honors.
The Spartans will look to continue their most successful season yet as they travel to Indianapolis for the Midwest Regional Finals over the weekend of November 11/12. The first game will take place on Saturday, November 12th at 3PM against the Challenge Cup winner of the Three Rivers Collegiate Rugby Conference. The field is located at Cyntheanne Park in Fishers, IN.
